I can’t help smiling when I see this image of Berndnaut Smilde’s Nimbus II.
It’s going to be no surprise to anyone who knows my work why I’m in love with Monica Cook’s exhibition “Volley.”
I can’t remember a show this touching and terrifyingly “oogy” (sorry to pull out a $5 art word on you). These sculptures, which are actually puppets she uses in the stop-action animation on view in the next room, are, may seem a bit repulsive on first view, but they draw you in with the ingenuity of their craft and their terribly poignant, life-like eyes. Gallery owner Magdalena Sawon aptly described the work as tender, which feels like the perfect word. The video is phenomenal - 6 minutes that will haunt me with its delicate and fertile beauty for a long time to come.
Cook’s work straddles the line between the grotesque and the beautiful, the terrifying and the tender because - IMHO - these pieces reveal basic truths about relationships. Kudos to Cook and to Postmasters.
This show is truly a MUST SEE — it’s on view at Postmasters until 2/11.Read more about the show here.
Passing thru Times Square…a rush of color and light on a snowy night.
Love starting the new year in the studio. Lots of play-time with super lo-fi scratchboard.
